What is Light Therapy for Vitiligo?

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is a widely used treatment for vitiligo, a skin condition causing loss of pigment. It involves exposing affected areas to controlled ultraviolet (UV) light, stimulating melanocyte activity to restore skin colour. This safe, effective therapy can improve pigmentation, especially when combined with topical or systemic treatments.

What are the benefits of Light Therapy – Vitiligo?

  • Stimulates Re-pigmentation: Light therapy activates melanocytes, helping restore natural skin pigmentation
  • Non-Invasive Treatment: It offers a safe, needle-free option for managing vitiligo
  • Improves Skin Uniformity: Reduces contrast between affected and unaffected areas for a more even skin tone
  • Minimal Side Effects: Phototherapy is well-tolerated with proper medical supervision

How is Light Therapy for Vitiligo
Performed?

Initial Consultation: Our skin specialist evaluates your condition and determines if phototherapy is suitable for you.

Visia Skin Scan: We will conduct a Visia Skin Scan at the start of your course so we can monitor changes in the skin pre and post treatment

Preparation: We may apply a photosensitising medication, depending on the therapy type, and affected areas are exposed while unaffected areas are protected.

Use of a Phototherapy Unit: A specialised device emits controlled ultraviolet (UV) light, such as narrowband UVB (most common).

Regular Sessions: Treatments are usually scheduled two to three times a week, with sessions lasting between 30 seconds and 4 minutes.

Monitoring Progress: Results are evaluated periodically, and therapy adjustments are made to optimise re-pigmentation and minimise risks.

Phototherapy often requires multiple sessions over months for noticeable results, and it may be combined with topical or systemic treatments for better efficacy. Typically, we notice in improvement of between 50% – 90%.
