What are Thread Veins?

Thread veins, medically known as telangiectasia or spider veins, are small, dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin.

They are characterised by their fine, web-like appearance, often red, blue, or purple in colour. While they are generally harmless, they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals.

What Causes Thread Veins?

The primary cause of spider veins is the weakening or damage of the blood vessel walls.

This can result from a variety of factors, including: prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays, genetics, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy or menopause), and certain medical conditions like rosacea. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and long periods standing or sitting can contribute to the development of thread veins.

What is the treatment for Thread Veins?

In some cases, lifestyle modifications can help prevent the development of spider veins or minimise their appearance. These include wearing compression stockings, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet. However, when they have already developed and have become an aesthetic concern, laser therapy is proving to be a popular treatment option.

It involves using focused laser light to target the pigments in the blood, heating and destroying the affected blood vessel. At Prema we use the M22 laser by Lumenis, and this method is especially effective for smaller veins close to the skin’s surface.

It’s important to note that while these treatments are generally safe and effective, consultation with a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the most suitable approach for individual cases. At prema we can provide personalised recommendations and ensure the chosen treatment aligns with your specific needs and medical history. It’s also essential to point out that whilst the M22 laser can produce permanent results for the removal of thread veins, it does not guarantee the development of new thread veins appearing in the future.
