The most popular laser eye surgery is LASIK. It’s used to treat common concerns we refer to as refractive errors, including: astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.

LASIK/SMILE
LASIK/SMILE

When glasses or spectacles are recommended for helping to provide clear vision, they correct the way light bends when entering the eye to focus on the retina and not away from it. Through the use of LASIK this principle is applied for the long term as the curvature of the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of the eye) is reshaped.

We begin the procedure by delivering a series of rapid pulses with the femtosecond laser to create a corneal flap. This allows your surgeon to access the cornea, continuing with the Scwind Amaris 1050RS laser to remove the amount of corneal tissue required to change its shape. The flap can then be replaced which will heal on its own. Laser eye surgery can address both eyes during the treatment session, with your vision taking around 3 – 6 months to stabilise.

What are the benefits of LASIK / SMILE?

  • Quick and painless, lasting less than 10 minutes per eye
  • Rapid results with good vision the next day
  • Clinically proven treatment
  • 92-98% of patients are believed to achieve their expected results after LASIK
  • Bladeless surgery with no stitches
  • Further adjustments can be made in the future

How Is It Performed?

1. Local anaesthetic eye drops are administered to each eye
2. The femtosecond laser creates a thin flap on the surface of the cornea
3. The flap is gently lifted
4. The Schwind Amaris 1050RS laser is then used to reshape the cornea.
5. The flap is gently replaced and aligned back into its original position
6. The flap will heal by itself

At Prema we use the femtosecond laser, The Schwind Amaris 1050RS and The Ziemer Z8 lasers. The innovative technologies from these lasers make LASIK a precision treatment that can be programmed to meet your individual requirements.

These lasers are chosen for their high performance, combining advanced technologies for a safe and effective solution to refractive and therapeutic corneal surgery. The Schwind Amaris 1050RS in particular, is very fine (0.54 mm), has a repetition rate of 1050 Hz and has 7D eye tracking; properties that are in a class of their own. The treatment itself is performed quicker than many other laser eye surgery procedures, and can create a 3-dimensional flap which is much more stable and secure.

The team at Prema have performed numerous procedures which produce outstanding results. Our Consultant Eye Surgeons work both for the NHS and in Private Practice, and are trained to very high standards in cornea and refractive surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Each patient receives an inclusive care plan where they’ll be treated until discharge, including 2 years of follow-up appointments and any necessary retreatments. Our continuous care (after discharge) means patients can contact the clinic should any issues arise in the future. Our ethos focuses on patient-centred care, with each patient seeing the same doctor every time they visit.

Our consultations ensure all patients have been carefully examined and evaluated before being deemed suitable for treatment. All medical and surgical history is taken into consideration, as well as your general health and eye health – assessing for signs of eye infections, inflammation, dry eyes, large pupils, high eye pressure and other eye-health conditions. The shape, contour and thickness of the cornea will be measured, as well as any other irregularities in order to establish how much tissue will need to be removed. We’ll also discuss the details of the surgery, including: how the procedure is carried out, the benefits of surgery, any risks and potential complications.

LASIK may only take 10 minutes, and we’ll administer all necessary medication before you lie back in the chair. An instrument will help to hold the eyes open. We use the femtosecond laser to create the flap, and the Schwind Amaris 1050RS laser to remodel the cornea. Replacing the flap does not require stitches and will heal on its own.

LASIK is tolerated well by many patients who only report feeling some gentle pressure on the eye for around 30 seconds while the flap is being created.

The development of vision correction through the use of lasers means the procedure is virtually pain-free. Minor discomfort for a couple of days after the procedure can be expected, with the eyes feeling a little gritty

Patients are given a 4-week course of eye drops to be taken at home, with some patients needing lubrication drops for a further few months. Driving the next day is usually permitted as vision should be clear enough. However, patients should be aware that improvements will continue for up to 12 weeks. Prema will ensure progress is monitored at a series of follow-up appointments, as well as providing aftercare advice on activities that will need to be avoided in the coming weeks (swimming, sports, strenuous exercise, applying make-up etc.).

LASIK is considered to be very safe, however, patients should consider that any surgical procedure does not come without risk. Prema takes every step to ensure the likelihood of complications is kept to a minimum, and will only proceed if a patient is found to be a good candidate. Patients are informed of all potential risks which may include: dry eyes, haloes, glare, and under / over correction.
