When a person experiences issues with the quality of their vision, it’s usually due to light rays bending incorrectly when they enter the eye and focusing away from the retina instead of on its surface. In many situations, glasses (spectacles) are used to help light bend correctly for vision to remain clear.

The LASEK procedure focuses on changing the shape of the cornea (the clear window located at the front of the eye). It does this by using an alcohol-based solution, along with the laser, to move epithelial cells found on the surface of the eye to one side.

This method is an advanced version of vision correction, replacing a more invasive technique whereby a scalpel was used to form a flap. The development of laser eye surgery, particularly LASEK, has meant that patients can experience a more comfortable procedure with less downtime.

How Is It Performed?

1. Local anaesthetic eye drops are applied to both eyes

2. An alcohol-based solution is used to separate the cells from the surface of the cornea

3. The cells are gently rolled aside

4. The Schwind Amaris 1050RS is then used to reshape the cornea. An average 3 diopter treatment needs less than 6 seconds of laser application

5. The surface cells are replaced and aligned back into their original position

6. A contact lens is placed on the surface to act as a bandage

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

At Prema you’ll have a personally designated doctor who’ll carry out your consultation. During this session we conduct a thorough examination of the eye, checking for related concerns, such as: dry eye, large pupils and high eye pressure. Through a detailed analysis of the cornea, we’ll be able to assess your suitability for laser eye surgery, and determine which areas of the cornea to address.

Our care plan is fully inclusive of all treatments and follow-up reviews whilst in the clinic, and for up to 2 years thereafter. You will be seen by your designated surgeon at every appointment and you are encouraged to contact the clinic at any time, should you have any concerns.

With your surgeon will be a team of experienced optometrists and nurses. Laser eye surgery can be performed in as little as 10 minutes per eye, for which you will be lying in a comfortable reclining chair. You may be given some medication to help you relax, if this is necessary, and numbing drops will be applied to the eye. An instrument is used to keep the eye open, and a special solution that helps to separate the surface epithelial cells is applied through a ‘well’ that holds the solution in place for around 30 seconds. After the cornea has been reshaped, and the surface cells are back in place, a bandage contact lens is administered to protect the eye while it heals.

Laser eye surgery using the LASEK technique is found to be very comfortable. In most cases, patients only describe the feeling of some slight pressure on the eye while the procedure is being carried out.

It is normal for you to feel some minor discomfort in the 24 / 48 hours that follow the procedure. This is because treatment addresses the surface of the eye. Numbing drops and / or oral analgesia can be used to manage any post-treatment sensitivity.

The recovery period following laser eye surgery is usually tolerated very well. The eyes may feel irritated for a few days, with clearer vision developing within 4 – 7 days.

Our aftercare advice helps to reduce the chance of complications. We prescribe some eye drops for the first 4 weeks to prevent infection, but some patients also require lubrication drops for a further few months. This will be assessed at your follow-up appointments. You may legally drive the next day, but you should be aware that it can take several weeks for your vision to stabilise. We advise you to avoid applying eye make-up for a few weeks, as well as strenuous exercise, heaving lifting and sports / swimming.

As laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure we can not guarantee it is totally risk-free. A comprehensive consultation ensures we are confident of your suitability for the procedure, and we’ll ensure you are fully informed before the procedure goes ahead. There is a slight chance of small risks, including: dry eyes, haloes, glare and under / over-correction, and our highly trained team takes steps to ensure these risks are kept to a minimum.
